Window to the Past

Sold as a Going Concern on Exclusive Sole Mandate especially for you!

Open a window to the past with this 600 Ha property.

This historic farm was part of the original Plathuis Post Office, Church and School opened after the 1st World War in 1925, and the 144km railway line between Ladismith and Touws River ran past its doorstep.

This line was most famous for its little Makkadas passenger/goods snail-moving steam train. Directly over the road from the little Plathuis Station, was the Du Plessis Winkel, for decades a landmark in the area and visited by many travellers.

But as it is with history, all of this became mere statistics when the 1981 ‘Lainsburg-flood’ changed large parts of the Little Karoo landscape. Not only did all farming activities come to a standstill, but the lines running past the Plathuis Station was damaged beyond repair. Before this, the 1969 ‘Tulbach-earthquake’ shook the land and left its scars on the farm as well.

This farm consists largely of unspoiled Karoo veld. It is surrounded by the internationally acclaimed 7 000 Ha Touwsberg Private Game Reserve. The vast Little Karoo landscape is rich in typical fynbos and succulents that the area is known for, with game like Duiker and Steenbok in abundance. More than 160 bird species have been recorded in the area. The property has a number of Cape Mountain Zebra and Gemsbok, which is included in the sale. Most of the property is fenced with a 2.4m game fence, and the rest jackal-proof.

The main house was built almost a century ago and consists of four bedrooms, lounge, dining room, kitchen, toilet/bath separate and attic. Most of the woodwork is Oregon pine. Other buildings on the property are a number of garages, a three-bedroom labourer’s cottage, storerooms and a shop with butchery included. Most of the buildings are in need of minor repairs, and so are the three boreholes on the farm.

The potential for this beautiful property, situated just off the very popular R62, would be to combine game/livestock farming with guest accommodation. Or consider opening the Plathuis-Winkel again, combined with a museum to tell the story of the station, the earthquake and the flood.

Let your guests sit under the almost 100-year old Pepper Tree, enjoying Little Karoo cuisine as they acknowledge the snort of the Cape Mountain Zebra in the distance and see a pair of Black Eagles soaring high over the plateau of Koedoesplaatkop while the sun goes down behind the Touwsberg mountain.

What it needs now, is for that sentimental special person who can predict and envisage combining elements of an era long gone with the needs, possibilities and curiosity of a modern and global society. Here you can leave the fresh, brightly painted shutters open at night, to hear the Makkadas whistle as it rounds that last bend, nearing the Plathuis siding once again…

This is your chance to own a piece of South African history!
